I decided that instead of climbing masada we'd climb the mountain next to it for the sunrise then climb down the backside of the mountain and climb masada from the rear up the roman ramp that the romans used to assail the jews two thousand years ago.  A great idea but I couldn't remember where the other mountain was at and it was pitch black so we picked one that had no trail and it turned out to be a 4.5 hour hike to get to the backside of masada.  We could have climbed masada in a half hour doing it the traditional method. I do have to say it was one of the most amazing hikes I've been on and easily was an 8 or 9 out of ten in terms of difficulty.  There were a few times we thought we'd have to go back or call for help since there was no trail and it was so dangerous.  There are some videos at the bottom you should check out.  One shows how treacherous our path was.

When we first reached the peak, silhouette.  Even though it's out of order I think it is an amazing picture and decided to use it first.

The climb we had to go up.  It was pitch black, with loose rocks and no path.  That is Adams back you are looking at.  This is around 5:00 am.

Beautiful sunrise about 3/4 of the way up the mountain.

Me once we hit the peak.  You can see the dried out part of the dead sea and mountains of Jordan in the background. What a great shot.  Waterbottle in hand.

You could see the sun and the moon perfectly in the sky. These were shot at the exact same time.

Baruch, Adam, and JB sitting in a cave.  Aren't cameras with timers on them awesome.  I had to run and jump to get next to Adam in this shot before the timer went off.  I look so natural don't I?
